General Michael Flynn resigned from his post as national security adviser on 2/13 amid media hysteria surrounding Russia’s alleged “influence” on the Trump administration.
The move signals a possible conflict between establishment figures and political outsiders within the Donald Trump cabinet.
Fox News is reporting Flynn mislead Vice President Mike Pence about a meeting on Russian sanctions with the nation’s ambassador to the United States Sergei Kislyak late last year. Pence, who was relying on faulty information, publicly stated that the retired general had not communicated with any Russian officials.
The move could have also been the byproduct of the leftist media’s smear campaign regarding Russia’s supposed “influence” on Trump. It’s possible those close to the president arrived at a group consensus to distance themselves from Flynn – who was not honest with VP Pence about communicating with the Russian ambassador.
Flynn likely saw the writing on the wall and stepped down voluntarily to avoid further distractions. He said the following in his resignation letter:
“Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President Elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian Ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology.”
Alt-right personality and ardent Trump supporter Mike Cernovich referred to the former DIA head’s resignation on Twitter as a “massive tactical blunder” and “show of weakness”.
Cernovich also retweeted reports indicating Flynn never made any promises in his meeting with Kislyak about lifting Russian sanctions levied by the Obama administration. Rather, the retired general allegedly discussed improving US-Russian relations.
Expect elements of the Military Industrial Complex to exploit this situation to promulgate the claim that President Trump is beholden to Vladimir Putin.
Flynn supporters on social media are demanding that the president refuse to accept his resignation.
