The following is a brief update of several main stories associated with the New York Terror attack, including links to the expanded stories

(New York Post) President Obama sought to reassure the nation after the terror attacks over the weekend — but didn’t specifically call the incidents in Manhattan and New Jersey terrorism.

“We’ve seen what was apparently a pipe bomb go off in New Jersey, in Seaside Park, where it could have seriously injured our US Marines and spectators who were there for a race. The bombing in the Chelsea neighborhood here in New York injured more than two dozen people,” Obama said, recounting attacks believed to have been carried by Ahmad Khan Rahami, who was capturedMonday morning.

Obama offered prayers for those who have been injured and praised police in New York City and New Jersey.

The president said “the investigation is moving rapidly” but didn’t offer more details — and refrained from commenting on the wannabe killer’s motivations.

In a brief statement to the press, Obama did mention another attack — the stabbings over the weekend in St. Cloud, Minnesota — and this time he did comment on the motivation for that incident.

“At this point, we see no connection between [the Minnesota] incident and what happened here in New York and New Jersey,” Obama said, speaking in New York.

Re-Radicalized in Mideast

(Boston Herald) ELIZABETH, N.J. — A man who described himself as a childhood friend of the 28-year-old busted today in connection with this weekend’s New York-area bombings told the Herald the suspect made a life-changing trip to Afghanistan two years ago.

“At one point he left to go to Afghanistan, and two years ago he came back, popped up out of nowhere and he was real religious,” friend Flee Jones, 27, said of suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami. “And it was shocking. I’m trying to understand what’s going on. I’ve never seen him like this.”

Police this morning released a photo of Rahami, an Afghan immigrant, and U.S. citizen, wanted for questioning in the bombings that rocked a Manhattan neighborhood and a New Jersey shore town. Rahami was taken into custody after a gunfight in nearby Linden today at 11:20 a.m. (See that story here…)

The terror suspect’s arrest came after investigators this morning swarmed a chicken restaurant and apartment here in connection with the hunt for Rahami, Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage told the Herald.

 Sued Police

(Daily Mail) The prime suspect in the New York and New Jersey bombings sued his local police force and claimed they were persecuting him for being a Muslim.

Ahmad Rahami said in a lawsuit that cops in Elizabeth, New Jersey subjected him and his family to discrimination and ‘selective enforcement’ based on their religion.

The family claimed that police tried to shut down their chicken restaurant, called First American, too early each night with ‘baseless’ tickets and summonses.

Mystified by Muslim Motive

(CNN)  But two big questions remain. What was the motive? And is anyone else responsible?
Here are the latest developments:
— The “main guy” has been caught but the investigation continues to determine if Rahami had help, sources told CNN. Though FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr., said there is “no indication” of an active operating cell in the New York area, evidence suggests Rahami was not acting alone, said Rep. Adam Schiff and a National Counterterrorism Center official. Schiff, a California Democrat, is ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement has stressed there is no reason to believe a bomber is on the run.
— Rahami has been “directly linked” to devices in New York and New Jersey, FBI Special Agent William Sweeney said Monday.
— Sweeney also said a traffic stop Sunday night of five people in New York led to searches and interviews in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Rahami’s last known address was in Elizabeth, and an explosives-laden backpack was found there Sunday night. Those five people were questioned but do not face charges.
— Two officers were hit in the shootout with Rahami in Linden, New Jersey, the mayor of the nearby city of Elizabeth said. One officer’s vest was struck, and the other was shot in the hand.
— Authorities believe Rahmani is the man seen in surveillance videos rolling a duffel bag near the scene of the bombing in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, according to multiple officials.

(WASHINGTON (AP)  The U.S. government has mistakenly granted citizenship to at least 858 immigrants from countries of concern to national security or with high rates of immigration fraud who had pending deportation orders, according to an internal Homeland Security audit released Monday.

The Homeland Security Department’s inspector general found that the immigrants used different names or birthdates to apply for citizenship with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and such discrepancies weren’t caught because their fingerprints were missing from government databases.

DHS said in an emailed statement that an initial review of these cases suggest that some of the individuals may have ultimately qualified for citizenship, and that the lack of digital fingerprint records does not necessarily mean they committed fraud.

The report does not identify any of the immigrants by name, but Inspector General John Roth’s auditors said they were all from “special-interest countries” — those that present a national security concern for the United States — or neighboring countries with high rates of immigration fraud. The report did not identify those countries.
