About 3 years ago, I was driving down the highway; it was around 3:15 pm on a Monday Afternoon, and I was in the far left lane. Each vehicle around me was doing about 75 MPH, and traffic was not only very busy, but absolutely brutal. Now, I had my music turned up, and despite the traffic, it was a nice sunny day. What I hadn’t realized until it was too late, however, was that my car had begun to slow down. I had engine failure, and had only precious seconds before I would come to a complete stop– and I did, in the middle lane. It wasn’t good. The only traffic that was behind me went around as soon as they had the chance, and it wasn’t long before I had traffic zooming past me as I sat there in my car. I felt helpless, couldn’t get my car to start, and didn’t have a phone on me.. so I prayed.
A minute later, still attempting to get my car to start, I look up at my rear view mirror and see a Police Cruiser sitting behind me– He had actually gotten traffic on my right side to come to a complete stop, and used that space to walk up to my passenger side door. He asked me to put it in neutral and turn the wheel to the right.. I did. He then used the bumper of his car to push my vehicle all the way over and onto the dirt on the side of the highway. Now you can imagine how grateful I was, and me, well I couldn’t express it enough to this kind Police Officer who may have just saved my life. I thanked him many times before he got back in his squad car and drove away, letting me know beforehand that he was in a real hurry and was glad that he could be there to get my car off the road.
Now, I was standing by my car in the heat of the mid day, when I realized that the next exit was half a mile away.. so I started walking. Not 5 minutes later another Police Officer pulled up on the side of the highway and waved me over to him. I walked up to his passenger side door and he asked “You ok?”. I let him know that I was walking towards the nearest gas station to see if they had a phone I could use to get a tow. He said he was on his lunch break, and ended up offering his own personal cell phone while he sat in his car and ate his lunch. I was completely taken care of, from the kindness of these 2 police officers. I’m forever grateful.
I have so much love and respect for our Police Officers.. and to any of you who serve on the force.. I just want to say thank you for what you do. You are misunderstood by many, but just know that you are also loved and prayed for. Thank you.
