On this edition of “stupid things Melissa Harris-Perry” says…
Melissa Harris-Perry, the same person who said “hard worker” was an offensive term because slaves worked hard a century ago, and Star Wars was a racist movie because James Earl Jones voiced Darth Vader, made a similarly ludicrous statement yesterday on national television.
The leftist MSNBC host said “a lot of people shoot their wives with perfectly legal guns” and that “they wouldn’t if they did not have them.”
Harris-Perry made the comments during a panel discussion on her show about guns and a particular incident involving Quintonio Legrier, who police killed during an altercation.
The entire exchange between Harris-Perry and her co-host Jon Shane went as follows:
Melissa Harris-Perry: It seems to me that part of what happened in each of these cases is — and the question of fear — is it in part because we live in a country where really anybody at any moment might, in fact, have a gun. Again, I keep thinking about Quintonio’s father in Chicago calling for help for his son, calling the police, and his son ends up shot and killed by the police. Now I don’t know exactly what happened, we will be learning more. But I presume some part of it is that these police officers think that this kid might be armed because we think everybody might be armed. Shouldn’t officers be the number one folks behind gun control?
Jon Shane: Well, you do have a lot of second amendment officers. I happen to favor carrying a gun myself. I don’t think there’s much wrong with it. The reality is how are we going to keep the illegal guns away from people? It’s a very easy thing to do to keep guns …
Harris-Perry: A lot of people shoot their wives with perfectly legal guns.
Harris-Perry: So they wouldn’t if they did not have them. So, so …
Shane: But we’re not going to take guns away from people. We’re just going to make it harder for law-abiding citizens to get them. Source
Evidently, the government should revoke your second amendment rights because crazy people exist and they do crazy things once in a while. In America, someone is killed or injured by a drunk driver every two minutes but nobody calls for banning automobiles. Why? Because such a measure would be devoid of logic and fundamentally stupid.
Crazy people doing crazy things are exactly why we need the second amendment, they’re exactly why we need to be armed in order to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Chicago already proved that gun control doesn’t work, the city boasts strict firearm regulations that coincide directly with skyrocketing rates of violent crime.
Furthermore, overall gun violence is down 51% since 1991 while Americans purchased 170 million new firearms over the last two decades.
So, no, Melissa, gun bans won’t stop men from shooting their wives (since when was that a national epidemic to begin with?) it’ll only make it easier for criminals to massacre unarmed Americans.
Oh, and by the way, women kill their spouses just as often as men do.
