Obama: “Mass Incarceration Doesn’t Work”

President Obama, or whoever runs his Twitter account, posted some depressing information about the billions America is wasting on mass incarceration.

We could eliminate tuition at every public college and university in America with the $80 billion we spend each year on incarcerations.

Mass incarceration doesn’t work. Let’s build communities that give kids a shot at success and prisons that prepare people for a 2nd chance.

We need to move away from a society that throws drug addicts in jail and then back into the streets instead of getting them help.  They’re committing a crime against themselves, and something needs to be done to actually change their behavior at the conclusion of their punishment.   These people are failing to assimilate back into the world.  With the United States leading planet Earth in the number of incarcerated citizens, one can easily conclude that something just isn’t working.  Whether its a failing education system, an overly aggressive culture, a low value of human life, or a judicial system where criminals routinely cycle in and out of prison as they commit the same crimes without learning to change – there is no question that America has a problem in this area.  A big one.  And its costing us billions.  .

Can you think of a solution?  All comments are welcome below.
