Today, Mandatory GMO labeling did not gain congressional approval (source). This was a ruling based on crony capitalism (the favoritism of large corporations), which will profoundly impact the food industry and the right of the general public to make informed decisions.
GMOs are a 15 year experiment, their safety is backed by an inadequate amount of evidence. While labeling could slightly increase the cost of food, one must consider that informed consent might be worth the extra cost. If GMOs are to be presumed safe, why would Monsanto be absolutely terrified of full disclosure? Their actions only add to mass skepticism of their product.
Big corporations should be held accountable for their actions, labeling would have been the perfect way to achieve that while providing the American people with useful information about what they’re eating.
